Open House Archaeology

Open House Archaeology 2026

The Open House Archaeology event returns to reveal the precious archaeological heritage of the city of Lisbon, and the Milling Factory is one of the treasures to be discovered.

The bread, biscuits and pasta tour takes us through the area where the raw materials for making these foods were obtained.

Flour was a staple food for the Army, used in various products manufactured at the Military Maintenance plant, in buildings adjacent to the Milling Factory. Learning about this food industry manufacturing process for the Army, which operated for over a century, will be one of the highlights of this visit.

Two sessions available: September 12 , 2026 at 11:00 or 14:30.

Registration required via email: openhousearqueologia@museudelisboa.pt

About Open House Archaeology 2026

Allowing visitors to enjoy our history, to see up close ancient vestiges trapped in the ground, and to look at the past firsthand, is the great attraction of this initiative, which the Lisbon Museum - Roman Theatre is organizing for the fifth time.

After the success of the previous four editions, with almost all visits sold out, for this year's edition the Lisbon Museum - Roman Theatre challenged municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area to join the Open House Archaeology. Ten accepted the invitation, expanding the reach of this unique event for the dissemination of archaeology: Almada, Amadora, Loures, Oeiras, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sintra, and Vila Franca de Xira.

In total, 74 locations will open their doors on September 12th and 13th to unveil different layers of the history of Lisbon and the 10 municipalities that, this year for the first time, are joining this event organized by the Lisbon Museum - Roman Theatre.
